The Karnataka State Basketball Association was constituted in the year 1941. The office is located at ‘Thirumale’, No. 35, First Cross Road, Malleswaram, Bangalore-3. The Association is a registered · body and is affiliated to the Basketball Federation of India. The aims and objects . of the Association are of encouraging, promoting, regulating and controlling the game of Basketball in the State of Karnataka. The high Standard of play exhibited by Karnataka State Teams and their sense of discipline on and off the field are indicative of the organisational capacity and competency of the State Association.

The Association has got a membership of J4 Clubs and Institutions with 3 District Associations. The District Associations in turn have got a membership of 25 Clubs and Institutions.

The Association is conducting every year Senior & Junior League Tournaments & League for Boys under 17 l years of age. 1n addition every year State Championships for Men for the “Association Cup” and for Boys for “Lt. D.N. Rajanna’s Trophy” and Mini Basketball for Boys under 12 years of age are conducted. During the year 1974, all the State Championships and League Tournaments and 5 State Level Tournaments and 2 All India Flood Light Tournaments were conducted.

During the years 1959 and 1963 the Association conducted the National Championships at Bangalore. During 1973, the 2nd Test Match for Junior Boy’s between Sri Lanka and India was conducted in a mofussil place for the development of game in rural areas.

Every year the State Association deputes all the three State Teams, viz., Men, Women and Boy’s for participation in the Annual National Championships conducted by the Basketball Federation of India at different places in India . . During 1973, the State Women’s team reached the finals in the Nationals at Madras and was Runners-up. The Boys’ team reached the quarter finals of the knockout tournament. The Men’s team secured the 3rd place in the league tournament.

Recently, the State Women’s team participated in the Pre-Asian Tournament at Bhilwara conducted by the Bhilwara District Association Rajasthan. Our team secured the third place in the Championship.

During September 1974, the State Mini Boys Team participated in the 2nd Mini National Basketball Championship 1974 conducted at Hissar, Haryana State. Our team reached finals and were Runners-up.

A number of State players are selected by the Basketball Federation of India to represent the Indian Team in the International Championships. Between the years 1951 to 1966, the following players represented India in the International Championships.

In recent years, during 1967 one of our player Sri B. Muniyappa represented India in the Asian Basketball Championship (A.B.C.) at Seoul, South Korea.

During 1969, two of our players Sri K. Rajagopal and Sri S. A. Rangadev represented India in the A.B.C. held at Bangkok. Once again during 1970 both these players were selected to represent India in the Asian Games held at Bangkok. One of our Women Player Smt. A.C. Pushpa represented India in the Asian Women Basketball Championship 1970 held at Kuala Lumpur. One of our Junior Boys’ player Sri A. Anil Kumar was selected to represent Indian Boys’ Team in the Asian Youths Basketball Championship-1970 held at Seoul, South Korea.

During 1971, two of our players Sri S. V. Rangadev and Sri R. Jairaj represented India in the 6th A.B.C. held at Tokyo. During 1972, three of our Junior Boy’s players Sriyuth M. C. Selvakumar, B. Chandrappa, P. M Murali, represented India in the 2nd Asian Youths Championship held at Manila (Philippines).

Our State Association Secretary Sri B. S. Narayan, is the Senior Vice-President of the Basketball Federation of India from 1972. During the year 1971 Sri B. S. Narayan accompanied the Indian Men’s Team as Manager for participation in the 6th Asian Basketball Championship held at Tokyo. In the past Sri V. Byrappa was the Hon. Treasurer of the Basketball Federation of India from 1957 to 1959.

The game is controlled by a well organised Referees Board of the Association. Every year, Referees Examination is conducted to augment the strength of the Referees to cope up with the increasing tournamental activities of the association. A number of ‘A’ Referees of the Association are included in the All India Panel of Referees. Sri J. Aswath Rao, a Senior Referee of the Association is an International Referee. Sri V. K. Sundaresan, also an International referee of the Association was the Chairman of the All India Referees Board.

During the years 1953 and 1954 our players had the benefit of coaching at the hands of the American Coaches Mr. Ted Arnold and Mr. Frank Kaufman. They also trained a number of Senior players as Coaches who carried on the good work of the American Coaches for a number of years in the State.

The Association is conducting Coaching camps every year. The State Men, Women and Boys and Girls teams selected for participation in the Annual National Championships are given intensive training in the coaching camps prior to their departure for participation in the National Championships. The Services of N.I.S. Basketball Coaches are utilised for conducting these coaching camps.

The Karnataka State Sports Council is helping the Association in big way by providing financial assistance to enable the Association to depute its team for participation in the National Championship for conducting coaching camps and for deputing players for participation in the International Championships. There is an urgent need for an indoor stadium in Bangalore and the Association has approached the State Sports Council for the construction of the same.

In view of the many sided activities of the association, the Game of Basketball is getting popular in the State and the game has attained a high standard. Further, the Karnataka State Basketball Association has attained a high place of recognition in the field of Basketball in India. It is the earnest endeavour of the State Association to popularise the game and spreading it to the nook and corner in the State. The Office Bearers and Members of the Association are putting forth all their efforts and striving hard to achieve the object.
